People posted that questiong muchly on the blog you reference. My answer is yes. I know for a fact that I would have, because before I was even halfway through my first book, I realized it was a mess. But I didn’t stop it and write another book. I forced myself to finish it, knowing already it was a mess (even though I still submitted it and got the partial request from the query followed by the rejection).

Becuase I also knew I had to go through the experience of writing a whole book.

But Cyn, would you slave away at writing a novel if you knew it would never ever get published? Poems are different, I think, because the gratification is much more immediate than with a novel. You work hard to write a poem, but it will still be done in a fraction of the time it would take to write a novel.

OTOH, I wrote a novel a couple of years ago that I thought would sell, but quickly realized it wouldn’t because it didn’t have any high commercial hooks. I wrote it anyway, and I still dream of revising it. Or waiting until the market swings back around to quieter stories.

Verily I say unto thee, when artists cease creating, their heads shall burst forth ruin. And ruinous matter shall cover the moon and the stars and the sun. And the rivers shall run red with blood and ligers shall escape from the zoos, and the ligers shall feast upon accountants, gynecologists, stock brokers, cosmetologists, scientists, in laws and proctolgists. And the agents publishers and producers will gnash their teeth and rend their clothing and they shall cry out “Forgive us our sins and we shalt honor thou paintings and music and sculptures and even thou most boring novels.” Then the artists did grow new heads and burst forth new works and Al Gore did grin and Hollywood did see that it was good and Dick Cheney did emerge from his subterranean lair. Yea, all this did I see and more while living in exile on the island of Crete, and more shall I reveal on my upcoming reality show, should it be my will.

Since I have not published a book , I am pretty sure that the answer is…. yes. I CANNOT NOT write.

It slips, slides off my pen and onto a white sheet of paper. It is the graffiti on my computer screen. I dream of it at night.
