Happy Halloween!

Did you decorate for Halloween? I have two pumpkins, uncarved. I bought candy. I think that’s good enough. :) What about this place, hmm? It’s in West Virginia. There are over 3000 pumpkins, and a group of volunteers carves them (ya think?). You can read more about it here.

When I was a kid, I used to look forward to Halloween so much. I didn’t live in a suburb, but in the country. My mom had to pile us into the car and take us driving around the countryside for candy. These days, kids have such safe choices — neighborhoods banding together, malls, churches, etc, that hold Trick or Treat for kids. I think that’s great.

Indeed, Halloween has turned into its own season now. The decorations, parties, greeting cards, etc. It goes on and on. When I was a kid, costumes were chintzy — K-Mart or Wal-Mart things with those horrible plastic masks that you couldn’t see through or breathe out of. I can’t remember any of the costumes I had. I do remember one I threw together though.

I wanted to be Samantha from Bewitched so much. My mother had this flowing black coat that made me think of Samantha’s coat. I borrowed the coat, and a blonde wig (not that I wasn’t blonde already, but my hair didn’t look like Sam’s). I think I wore a pair of my mother’s shoes (they were too big, naturally). That was my costume, LOL. I imagine I looked seriously odd, but I was happy.

What was your best costume ever? Will you be dressing up for Halloween today? What was your favorite Halloween candy? I loved candy corn, though I can’t stand the stuff now. :)

I won’t be dressing up, but the DH has talked about putting his Prince of Darkness make-up and costume on and opening the door like that. I suggested he sit in the shrubbery like a decoration and then yell “Boo!” when a kid walks by. Of course, he could scar a little kid for life. So maybe he’ll just answer the door. I have Snickers and Reece’s PB Cups in case we don’t have many kids. Those are our faves. And that reminds me I need to hunt down the light-up decoration for the front porch.

I won’t be dressing up tonight. We did get the pumpkins and a watermelon carved (well, DG did that). But that’s about it. Even AC has decided to go trick-or-treating with a friend, so we don’t have to supervise that!

Halloween is fun, but minor around here…

So…you’re going to be sending the picture of you dressed as Samantha in for the contest PC and I are doing, right?

LOL, PM! My hubby has an awesome zombie costume that he puts on sometimes (he won’t tonight though). I have pictures, but they are on a different computer. *sigh*

PC, a watermelon? I never thought of that!

SP, wish I had a picture, but I don’t. This was in the days before digital cameras, ahem. Who knows where the pics are buried in my mother’s house?

    Hi Lynn!

We don’t really celebrate it here in Oz, or at least I’ve yet to see it happen. Occasionally you’ll get a random trick or treat but two in the same night’s unheard of for most of us. I think it’s seen as a safety issue. We’re more likely to have dances for the kids.

Thanksgiving’s the same. For some reason it just hasn’t stuck, which is interesting considering a LOT of our media comes from the U.S. and you’d think that the kids would win on the free candy front.

Hi, Nikki! I wouldn’t have guessed that about Oz. :) I thought the commercial juggernaut was well on its way to making Halloween a season in all four corners of the globe. :)

I think Thanksgiving is such a neat holiday. All about eating. :) Probably just as well you don’t do that Down Under! Really, who needs to eat so much? *g*
